Today I’m blogging primarily to blow off some proverbial steam. See, for the third time in a row, I was stood up. Three times I logged on to the videoconferencing software, three times I texted to see if they were planning on joining the meeting, and three times to no avail.
“Out there”, the sciences blend and work together in perfect harmony to keep things going and growing. And yet, as we think of the “disciplines” of science, we often don’t think of their interconnectedness.
The reality is that it’s actually more challenging to teach online than it is in person. It’s harder to get and keep students involved, and answering questions is very challenging since they cannot be answered for the entire class.
The contribution of the arts in our society are more critical than most people know, but these talents should be coming into sharp relief now.
Frequently I would say that there are no problems, only opportunities. Opportunities to learn, opportunities to rise, opportunities to do better. If you are somebody who needs to assign a purpose to everything that happens, I respectfully submit that learning is the purpose of the Coronavirus.
Yes, we can talk about volume occupied by air in Styrofoam, or for more advanced kids even density as the same mass occupies a smaller volume and therefore is more dense, but it’s also just fun to see the Styrofoam dissolve. Asking the simple question of how so much Styrofoam can fit into such a small volume is the first step of the scientific method, getting students to ask why and conjecture as to possible reasons, and a great introduction to Science.

spring break is so important for the mental well-being of students. So, my personal wish is that they all have a happy, fun, exciting break and all return to us healthy, refreshed and ready to round out the year.
I came to realize that “ABD” basically stood for “incomplete”. In hiring committees, if they included an anticipated date of defense, that was fine, but otherwise I wouldn’t even consider anybody who listed “ABD” without an anticipation of defending.
Tenure is as close to the proverbial “all of your eggs in one basket” scenario as I’ve ever seen.
